What is Labiaplasty?

Labiaplasty is a surgical procedure that reshapes and reduces the size of the labia minora and majora, the external folds of skin that surround the vaginal opening.

This procedure is suitable for both cosmetic and medical purposes.

Labiaplasty can treat a variety of complaints, including discomfort caused by enlarged labia, irritation caused by asymmetry, and psychological issues caused by labial appearance.

Labiaplasty can be done as an outpatient procedure, usually under local anesthesia.

The procedure typically takes two hours to complete, with a two-week recovery period. After a few days of rest, most patients are able to return to work and other activities.

Benefits of Labiaplasty

FAQ

Labiaplasty is the surgical procedure that is performed on the labia minora. The labia are folds of skin that are around your vaginal opening on the vulva. Labia minora are the inner lips while labia majora are the outer lips.

It is performed to remove the excess skin and tissue of the labia minora so that it sits neatly tucked within the labia majora. Labiaplasty ensures smaller and symmetrical labia that’s both aesthetically pleasing and functional. Careful technique preserves sexual sensation and function while achieving cosmetic goals.

Labia Majora Reduction, which eliminates extra tissue on the labia majora, or the outer lips of the vulva, is one of the most popular procedures performed. Labia Minora Reduction is a procedure that involves removing extra tissue from the labia minor, or the inner lips of the vulva, and then contouring the tissue.

Being born with or developing enlarged labia due to childbirth or old age is just one of several factors that can bring women bodily and mental discomfort. For many of Dr. Broad’s Newport Beach Labiaplasty patients, labiaplasty alleviates many of the physical and mental issues that they have.

Liposuction can be used to alter the look of the Mons Pubis (the fatty area under the pubic hair) and to shrink unusually big labia. This surgery, also known as Labia sculpting, is performed by our Orange County Labiaplasty specialists.

The benefits of the operation go far beyond the cosmetic ones; they also help a woman’s sense of self-worth and self-confidence be rebuilt. This small outpatient surgical procedure allows ladies to look and feel their best at a reasonable cost and with minimal recovery time.

The two reasons that would encourage women to go for labiaplasty are:

01. FUNCTIONAL

Some women have difficulty wearing certain clothes, riding a bike, going for horse-ride, discomfort during sexual intercourse, working out and even obstruction and discomfort with hair removing processes like shaving and waxing.   Women who are facing discomfort with the mentioned or any other regular life activities would want to go for this treatment.

02. COSMETIC

There can also be cosmetic reasons to go for labiaplasty. A woman may not like the excess tissue of the labia protruding or might dislike the shape and size. They prefer thin aesthetically pleasing labia for looking cuter down there.

Each patient is unique in their own way. The requirement of every patient is also different and therefore the duration also varies from patient to patient.

On average, the surgical time itself would be 45- 60 minutes. However, if you also include the preparation of the surgery, the marking of the incision, the recovery, it would take around 1½ to 2 hours.

A labiaplasty procedure is conducted within a few hours and the patient is sent home to recuperate along with instructions and guidelines for post-op care which must be strictly adhered to.

In total it would take about 4-5 hours from entering the hospital to leaving for home.

An enlarged labia minor could be due to a few reasons:

  • Genetics
  • Aging
  • Childbirth

After the labiaplasty surgery, your doctor will give you detail guidelines on your daily life activities. Some that we highly recommend are:

  • Take your medicines religiously – painkillers, antibiotics and anti-inflammatories.
  • Taking 3-4 days off from work
  • Get extra help to look after the kids and pets
  • Avoid vigorous activities – do the regular work just don’t do work unnecessarily and in excess
  • Avoid bathtubs, but take showers
  • Maintain proper hygiene after using the bathroom for nature’s calls, clean by dabbing the area clean to avoid contamination
  • Stay hydrated by increasing your liquid intake
  • Avoid smoking and drinking alcohol
  • Take extra care and rest for the following week

In case of bleeding, inflammation and unusual discomfort-get in touch with your doctor immediately

The procedure typically takes around one hour to complete and the recovery time is usually two weeks. Most patients can return to work and other activities after a few days rest.

You can resume sexual intercourse too within 4-6 weeks but in any case, listen to your body and back out from any activity that your body is not ready for.

There will be swelling in the area and it will feel swollen too. There might not be pain for the next 6-8 hours due to the long-acting pain medication in the incision site.

Once the numbing and pain medication tends to wear away, pain may begin to throb. Icing with help during the first few days. Apply ice in and around the perineal area to get relief and comfort.

It is normal to have a yellowish or blood-tinged discharge for the first few days. If there is discomfort, feel free to call up for any queries and we will be happy to guide you further.

The results of labiaplasty typically last for several years.

However, the longevity of the results can depend on various factors such as age, weight changes, and hormonal changes. The labia can also naturally change over time, which can impact the appearance of the results.
